US Eases Tanzania Travel Warning, Boosting Confidence in $4.4bn Tourism Sector

The United States has downgraded its travel advisory for Tanzania from Level 3 "Reconsider Travel" to Level 2 "Exercise Increased Caution", effective 16 October 2026. The change is significant for Tanzania's tourism industry, which generated $4.41 billion in receipts in 2025 - up 13% from $3.90 billion the previous year - with the US identified as the country's leading source market alongside Italy and France. Tanzania welcomed approximately 2.29 million international tourists in 2025, with average visitor spending reaching $289 per person per night.

The revised advisory follows a period of heightened caution linked to Tanzania's disputed 2025 election. While the nationwide downgrade may support visitor confidence across key destinations including the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Mount Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar, a Level 3 warning remains in place for the Mtwara border area adjoining Mozambique due to terrorism risks. The updated advisory also flags limited medical services outside Dar es Salaam and Arusha, and advises travellers to arrange insurance covering medical evacuation. No direct link between the advisory change and increased bookings has yet been established.
