Kampala, Uganda — December 3, 2024: Uganda’s tourism sector has seen a remarkable surge in employment, with the number of people directly employed along the tourism value chain skyrocketing from 200,000 in 2019/2020 to an impressive 610,806 in 2023/2024.

The statistics were released by the Ministry of Tourism during the NRM Manifesto Week.

The Ministry credited the rapid growth to strategic investments in workforce training, infrastructure, and product diversification.

The upgrade of key institutions such as the Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Institute (UHTTI) in Jinja and the Uganda Wildlife Research and Training Institute (UWRTI) in Kasese has played a pivotal role in creating a skilled labor force to support the expanding industry, according to the Ministry.

“This milestone of exceeding 610,000 jobs is a clear indicator of how tourism can drive meaningful employment and transform communities,” said Tourism Minister Tom Butime.
