Uganda to add gastronomy to its new 10-year tourism policy
Uganda is set to incorporate gastronomy into its new 10-year tourism policy, following insights gained from the recent UN Tourism Regional Tourism Forum on Gastronomy in Zimbabwe. Lilly Ajarova, CEO of the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), shared this development in an interview with VoyagesAfriq.
The country's culinary scene is experiencing a renaissance, with increased interest from entrepreneurs and the private sector. Ugandan restaurants serving local delicacies are now more prevalent in urban centres, making regional cuisines more accessible.
Agrotourism is also gaining traction, with newly developed guidelines encouraging farm-to-plate experiences. Cultural villages offering immersive traditional cooking experiences are on the rise, adding to Uganda's diverse tourism offerings.
The UTB is also focusing on developing its MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) sector, with significant infrastructure developments underway. New hotels from global brands like Hilton and Marriott are being constructed to support growing capacity needs.
The UTB plans to unveil its new Marketing Strategy in August, aiming to bolster Uganda's position as a premier tourism destination.
