Uganda receives eight white rhinos from South Africa
Uganda has received eight white rhinos donated by African Parks, which arrived by charter at Entebbe International Airport at 02:30 on 8 December 2025. The animals were received by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and transferred to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola, taking the national total to 59. Officials said the move supports Uganda’s rhino recovery strategy and strengthens the genetic pool.
UWA plans to translocate rhinos to Kidepo Valley National Park and Ajai Wildlife Reserve once preparations are complete – works currently stand at about 80% and 50% respectively. The authority is conducting genetic mapping and has added veterinary staff, while a rhino‑naming campaign in September raised over UGX 490 million to support the 2018–2028 management strategy targeting at least 5% annual population growth. The reintroduction is expected to enhance wildlife viewing and broaden tourism appeal in northern Uganda.
