Uganda pushes for fair competition under Africa’s single air transport market

Uganda is advocating for fair competition measures as African countries accelerate implementation of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), the African Union initiative aimed at creating a unified continental aviation market. Officials have stressed the importance of ensuring smaller and emerging carriers are protected from being overshadowed by larger airlines as liberalisation expands across the continent. SAATM is designed to improve connectivity, reduce airfares and strengthen intra-African travel by easing restrictions on air services between participating states.

Uganda’s position reflects broader discussions across Africa about balancing market access with sustainable competition and consumer protection. Industry stakeholders believe improved regional connectivity could significantly boost tourism, trade and economic integration, but note that harmonised regulation and equitable participation will be critical to ensuring long-term success for carriers across markets of different sizes.
