The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has commenced the 2025 Bwindi-Sarambwe Mountain Gorilla and inaugural Chimpanzee Census, officially launched by Executive Director Dr James Musinguzi at the Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park on 6 May. A team of 60 trained personnel—70% of them from UWA—will conduct the census in two phases, using nest count and genetic analysis methods. The first sweep is set to end in June, with the second scheduled for September.

The census aims to establish current population figures for mountain gorillas and chimpanzees in the region, assess threats, and guide future conservation efforts. The launch brought together stakeholders including the Rwanda Development Board, Jane Goodall Institute, Gorilla Doctors, and WWF Uganda. According to UWA, over 103 mountain gorilla births have been registered in Bwindi since 2019, signalling progress in long-term conservation goals.
