Uganda Airlines Launches Entebbe–Accra Route, Targeting Tourism and Trade Ties

Uganda Airlines inaugurated its UR900 service linking Entebbe and Accra via Lagos on 27 October, operating four times weekly using a Boeing 737-800 wet-leased from Ethiopian Airlines. The route extends the airline's existing West African network and is supported by fifth-freedom traffic rights granted by Ghana, allowing Uganda Airlines to carry passengers and cargo between Lagos and Accra as part of the same service. Uganda's Minister of Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, flagged off the inaugural flight at Entebbe, while government and aviation officials received it at Kotoka International Airport in Accra. Airline CEO Girma Wake indicated that the four weekly frequencies are a starting point, with plans to increase services as demand grows.

Tourism authorities on both sides are moving quickly to convert the new connectivity into visitor demand and commercial partnerships. The Uganda Tourism Board announced plans to engage Ghanaian travel agents, tour operators and the Ghana Tourism Authority through business-to-business meetings, promoting the Explore Uganda brand and developing joint itineraries that link West and East Africa. Ghana Tourism Authority Deputy CEO Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey highlighted the complementary nature of both destinations — Ghana's heritage, festivals and creative industries alongside Uganda's wildlife, gorilla trekking and cultural experiences — and called on tour operators to build cross-regional products. The route also carries significance ahead of AFCON 2027, which Uganda will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania, with Ghanaian and broader West African football fans identified as a key target market.
