Uganda Airlines launches direct flights to Abuja
Uganda Airlines has inaugurated scheduled flights between Entebbe International Airport and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Nigeria. The maiden flight touched down in Abuja on 12 September 2024, marking a significant milestone in Uganda-Nigeria relations.
Nigerian government officials, led by Dr Hassan Ejibunu representing Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, welcomed the flight. The Ugandan delegation was headed by State Minister of Transport Fred Byamukama.
This new route, operating twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays, is expected to boost economic, commercial, and social ties between the two nations. It becomes Uganda Airlines' 14th destination, following the launch of flights to Lagos in October 2023.
To commemorate the occasion, the 4th Nigeria-Uganda Trade and Business Forum was held on 13 September, bringing together stakeholders from both countries to explore mutual opportunities.
Ugandan High Commissioner Nelson Ocheger praised the new route as a bridge between Uganda and Nigeria, facilitating trade, tourism, and investment. Minister Byamukama highlighted that the direct flights would significantly reduce travel time and costs for business travellers.
This expansion aligns with Uganda's commitment to improving intra-African trade and connectivity.
