Two African Airports Feature in OAG's 2026 Global Megahub Rankings
Two African airports have been included in OAG's 'Megahubs 2026' report, which ranks the world's 50 most connected airports. OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg placed 40th globally - down two positions from 38th in 2025 - with local carrier Airlink operating 35% of all flights at the hub. Addis Ababa International Airport placed 50th, a significant improvement of ten positions from 60th last year, with Ethiopian Airlines accounting for 94% of its flights.
Within the combined Africa and Middle East regional grouping, African airports performed strongly, with four of the top ten regional positions claimed by the continent. OR Tambo ranked second, followed by Addis Ababa in fifth, Cairo in sixth - where Egyptair operates 38% of flights - and Casablanca in ninth, where Royal Air Maroc dominates with a 73% share. The findings highlight the growing connectivity of African aviation hubs, even as the continent remains underrepresented in the global top 50 relative to regions such as Europe, which claims 12 entries, and the US with 11.
