Timket’s eve draws global visitors – highlighting Ethiopia’s tourism appeal

Ethiopia marked Ketera – the eve of Timket (Ethiopian Epiphany) – nationwide on 19 January 2026 with solemn processions and colourful rituals. At Addis Ababa’s Jan Meda, foreign visitors described the celebrations as a powerful expression of unity, social solidarity and deep-rooted faith, reinforcing Timket’s standing as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and its growing global profile.

Travellers from France and Germany highlighted the scale of participation, the dignity of traditional white garments and the warm hospitality shown to guests, noting a profound spiritual atmosphere. They stressed the value of preserving Timket for its role in promoting tourism and cultural understanding and expressed interest in travelling beyond Addis Ababa – underscoring the festival’s ability to inspire wider exploration of Ethiopia’s history, faith and diversity.
