The Coot Club, near Hermanus

One of our all-time family favourites anywhere in Africa. Wild yet impressively elegant, relaxed yet beautiful, active and social, with quad biking, walks, boating and garden games. An amazing place.

Boschendal, Stellenbosch

This one was so very special. Relaxed, family-friendly gorgeousness on a beautiful wine estate, with horses, cycling, fruit picking, farm animals, picnics and plenty of wonderful eating.

Tintswalo Boulders, Simon's Town

A glorious boutique hotel overlooking Boulders Beach, with private access to see the famous penguins, and delicious food to match.

Our Top 3 Fun Things to Do in Cape Town (a little different from the guidebooks!)

Cape Town Ziplines with SA Forest Adventures: terrifying but exhilarating, or so they tell us. We watched from terra firma!

eBike Cape Town: we chose the Stellenbosch and Jonkershoek Valley route, and it was the best day out and the very best way to explore this beautiful corner of the Cape.

Cool Runnings Cape Town: hands down the best day out for a bunch of wriggly kids.

We couldn't leave out Kenya, and this month has been all about the coast.

The Cabanas, Kizingoni Beach, Lamu

A wild, wonderful, barefoot, family-owned beachside lodge with miles of empty beaches, endless watersports, dhow trips and the chance to explore the unexplored.

Zuri Beachfront Boutique Hotel, Watamu

Peaceful, small and personal, on a glorious private stretch of Watamu beach, yet close to all the fun if that's what's needed: waterskiing, kitesurfing, SUP, gelato, dhow sundowners, long lunches at Ocean Sports, the snake park, the ruins, shopping and bars.

Naisabah Dhow, Lamu

Not technically at the seaside, more in the sea, but it's awesome! Sail the Lamu archipelago aboard a beautiful dhow, with turquoise waters, hidden beaches, swimming and snorkelling, all with a wonderful crew, delicious food, cocktails… and aircon!
