The Gambia Appoints Sona Jobarteh as Roaming Tourism Ambassador

Internationally acclaimed kora player and cultural advocate Sona Jobarteh has been appointed Roaming Tourism Ambassador for The Gambia, announced by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture in Banjul. The appointment acknowledges her global influence and dedication to preserving Gambian cultural heritage, aligning with the Ministry’s vision to deepen cultural engagement through tourism. Minister Abdoulie Jobe highlighted her ability to connect global audiences with The Gambia's identity through art and education.

Jobarteh, the first professional female kora player from a West African griot lineage, emphasised her focus on storytelling and cultural representation in her new role. Founder of The Gambia Academy, which merges academic learning with cultural education, she brings a strong commitment to heritage-based development. Her recent recognition with an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music further strengthens her platform to promote The Gambia as both a cultural and tourism destination.
