Tanzania Opens New Mamire Gate to Expand Access to Tarangire National Park

The Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) has officially opened the Mamire Gate on the western side of Tarangire National Park, providing a new entry point for visitors travelling through Babati District in the Manyara Region. The gate, constructed at a cost of more than 3.92 billion Tanzanian shillings, is expected to boost revenue collection, expand tourism services, and create business and employment opportunities for communities surrounding the park.

Speaking at the opening on 23 April 2026, Senior Assistant Commissioner for Conservation and Head of the Northern Zone, Dr Beatrice Kessy, described the gate as a key link between Tanzania's Central and Northern zones, making Tarangire more accessible to visitors from Dodoma, Singida, and Manyara. Notably, tourists travelling from Dar es Salaam can now use the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to Dodoma and continue by road via Babati - bypassing the previously required route through Arusha - opening a more direct and efficient corridor to one of Tanzania's most celebrated national parks.
