The Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) has announced the launch of a new television programme, "The Slave Caravan," to educate local and international audiences on Tanzania’s slave trade history while promoting tourism. The show, set to debut on TBC’s Tanzania Safari Channel, will include documentaries, expert interviews, reenactments, and visits to historical sites along the slave caravan route from Zanzibar and Bagamoyo to Ujiji in Kigoma. The initiative seeks to leverage Tanzania’s cultural heritage as a tourism asset.

The programme aligns with a directive from President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who urged stakeholders to explore the tourism potential of the slave caravan route during the filming of The Royal Tour documentary in 2021. Following this, research led by the University of Dar es Salaam confirmed the route’s accessibility for various activities, such as walking tours and cycling. Through "The Slave Caravan," TBC aims to preserve Tanzania’s rich history, attract visitors, and support the growth of the tourism sector, further cementing the country’s position as a cultural and historical destination.
