Tanzania begins construction on new Ngorongoro-Lengai Geopark
Tanzania has launched construction of the new Ngorongoro-Lengai Geopark, a state-of-the-art facility funded by the Chinese government at 25 billion shillings. The project, due for completion in May 2025, aims to enhance Tanzania's position as a global tourism destination.
Tourism and Natural Resources Minister Dr Pindi Chana laid the foundation stone in Karatu, Arusha Region. The facility, being built by China Railway 25th Bureau Group, will serve Ngorongoro, Karatu, Monduli and Longido Districts with improved tourism information services.
The geopark will feature modern disaster detection equipment to monitor natural events such as volcanic eruptions, and include protective shelters for the preservation of the Laetoli hominin footprints in Ngorongoro.
Chinese Ambassador Chen Mingjian said the project strengthens bilateral ties between the two countries while showcasing Tanzania's natural resources and heritage sites. The development represents the latest collaboration in a partnership dating back to the 1960s spanning trade, culture, health and tourism sectors.
