Cape Town's iconic Table Mountain Aerial Cableway has temporarily suspended operations for essential maintenance. The closure, which began recently, will last until 1 September, halting all commercial activities during this period.

The 7-week shutdown is a crucial part of the cableway's commitment to global safety standards, including adherence to Swiss BAV regulations for cableways. This annual maintenance occurs during South Africa's winter, typically a quieter tourism season.

Andries de Vries, Technical Executive at TMACC, emphasised the comprehensive nature of the inspection, covering every aspect of the cableway to ensure alignment with international best practices and Original Equipment Manufacturers' specifications.

While acknowledging the inconvenience to visitors, de Vries noted that the winter period was chosen to minimise disruption to global travellers eager to experience the natural wonder of Table Mountain.

The 2024 maintenance schedule is particularly extensive, with various components requiring unique inspection and maintenance cycles. The company stressed that this temporary closure is essential for ensuring the continued safe operation of one of South Africa's most iconic tourism and heritage sites.

Visitors planning trips to Cape Town should note that the cableway will resume normal operations from 1 September.
