St Helena Airport regains Category 6 – flights resume

St Helena Airport regained Category 6 firefighting accreditation 15 February, allowing full air operations to resume. Scheduled Airlink services are set to restart on Tuesday 17 February, subject to favourable weather, restoring air access for travellers and essential services.

The approval follows commissioning tests on firefighting tender R1 – supported by R3 and St Helena Fire and Rescue Service – which have been accepted by independent regulator ASSI. Repairs to R2 continue without affecting accreditation, and longer-term replacement options are being explored with FCDO. No new tickets will be sold for the flights on 17 and Saturday 21 February; pre-booked passengers should travel as normal and remaining seats will be allocated for repatriation. Bookings are expected to reopen for Tuesday 24 February and beyond in due course.
