Southern Sun Launches R1.5 Billion Project in Umhlanga

Southern Sun has announced a major expansion into KwaZulu-Natal with a new R1.5 billion hotel and serviced residences development at the Oceans Umhlanga precinct, set to open in late 2027. Unveiled during the roof wetting ceremony of the Oceans Umhlanga North Tower on Friday, the Southern Sun Hotel & Residences Oceans Umhlanga will offer both short- and long-stay accommodation as part of the R5 billion mixed-use development that includes residential, retail, and hospitality components.
The new venture marks Southern Sun’s return to the region, nearly six decades after launching the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel, and is expected to strengthen tourism capacity in Umhlanga amid growing demand for high-end accommodation. The Oceans Umhlanga development has already delivered over 25,000 construction jobs and houses regional assets such as the Radisson Blu Hotel and Oceans Mall. Developers and officials describe the project as a significant boost for Durban’s tourism, job creation, and investor appeal, positioning Umhlanga as a key economic driver in KwaZulu-Natal.
