Southern Africa's Hospitality Think Tank Puts AI, Sustainability and Youth at Centre Stage
The fourth annual Hospitality Industry Think Tank took place on 31 July 2026 at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg, drawing senior voices from across Southern Africa's tourism value chain for a day of keynote addresses, panel discussions and the Oracle-themed Gala Dinner. Keynote speaker Johnny Goldberg, Chairman of Global Business Solutions, set the tone with a focus on artificial intelligence and industry transformation, warning that while AI will not replace hospitality professionals, those who embrace it will outpace those who do not. Five panels covered hotel operations, technology, industry associations, sustainability and youth development, with all proceeds directed to Touching Dreams, a non-profit supporting community empowerment, conservation and youth employment initiatives.
Key themes across the day included the urgency for hotels to develop AI strategies, the need to sell complete destination experiences rather than rooms alone, and the critical role of industry associations in driving visa reform, destination safety and coordinated marketing. The sustainability panel stressed that credible ESG data is now foundational to accessing green finance and managing climate risk, while the youth panel highlighted the expansion of the Touching Dreams Think Big Academy hospitality learnership programme from 20 learners in 2025 to 100 placed across South Africa for the 2026/27 cycle. A consistent message throughout was that collaboration - across businesses, associations and government - remains the industry's strongest tool for navigating disruption and driving sustainable growth.
