South African National Parks unveils new strategy “Vision 2040”
South African National Parks (SANParks) has launched Vision 2040, a groundbreaking strategy aimed at transforming conservation from "fortress" parks to inclusive catalysts for improved livelihoods. Chief Executive Hapiloe Sello unveiled the plan, emphasising the challenge of implementation.
Developed over 18 months through extensive consultation with diverse stakeholders, Vision 2040 reimagines conservation as a driver of social justice, economic advancement, and job creation. The strategy envisions a future where all South Africans have a stake in conservation and live harmoniously with nature.
At its core are Mega Living Landscapes, interconnected areas that will integrate national parks with surrounding communities and landscapes. This approach aims to foster sustainable development and broad participation in conservation efforts.
SANParks Board Chairperson Pam Yako highlighted the strategy's ambitious yet achievable goals, while Deputy Minister Narend Singh praised its inclusive approach. Vision 2040 aligns with global biodiversity targets, aiming to protect 30% of land and sea by 2030.
The plan will be embedded in SANParks' operations and performance reporting, marking a significant shift in South African conservation policy.
