South African National Parks (SANParks) has reintroduced Red Hartebeest and Elands to the Kwaggasvlakte section of Marakele National Park, located in the Waterberg Mountains of Limpopo Province. This initiative aims to restore ecological balance and enhance biodiversity in the region.

The animals, fitted with Sigfox Wildlife Tracking technology, will be closely monitored to study their movements and environmental interactions, facilitating more effective management strategies.

Marakele National Park, situated about 250 kilometres north of Johannesburg, is renowned for its diverse wildlife. The park is home to the Big Five and various other species including cheetahs, giraffes, and smaller mammals like meerkats.

The Kwaggasvlakte section, where the reintroduction has taken place, is characterised by open plains and grassy savannas. It houses the park's entrance gate and Bontle Rest Camp.

This reintroduction represents a significant step in SANParks' conservation efforts, potentially offering visitors enhanced wildlife viewing opportunities. The use of advanced tracking technology underscores the park's commitment to modern conservation practices, balancing ecosystem restoration with scientific research.
