South Africa’s KZN south coast leads Blue Flag beach awards
The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast has maintained its position as the region with the highest number of Blue Flag beaches in the province, as announced by the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (WESSA).
Seven of South Africa's 48 Blue Flag beaches are located along the KZN South Coast, with an additional five beaches holding Blue Flag Pilot status. The announcement, made at Cape Town's V&A Waterfront, highlights the region's commitment to maintaining international water quality standards.
Notable achievements include Trafalgar Beach's 15 consecutive years in the programme, whilst Marina Beach celebrates an impressive 21-year streak. The beaches have met strict criteria set by the Foundation for Environmental Education, including water quality, safety measures, and environmental education initiatives.
Dr Vusumuzi Sibiya, CEO of South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise, praised the achievement: "This recognition demonstrates our serious commitment to maintaining beach quality, which significantly contributes to our local tourism economy."
The region also boasts the province's highest number of tidal pools and two world-renowned dive sites. WESSA has been managing the eco-label programme in South Africa since 2001, ensuring continued compliance with international standards.
