For international travellers, South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province (also called KZN) is renowned for its beautiful beaches along the Indian Ocean coast. But a new rural tourism experience aims to showcase the rural charms besides KZN’s famous beaches.

This month, the South Coast Tourism & Investment Enterprise launched the Emalangeni Experience - a tourism route highlighting the rural Emalangeni area near the popular South Coast beach town of Pennington. The scenic Emalangeni region lies inland from the South Coast's main resort areas.

“The route gives visitors a more authentic experience of the region through cultural engagements, while supporting entrepreneurs and local job creation,” said acting CEO Deborah Ludick.

The rural route provides an authentic taste of local KZN life through cultural experiences, accommodation at countryside lodges, nature hikes, golf, brewery visits and more. Highlights include a historic house tour in Pennington, a nature reserve hike, locally run businesses like a shisanyama restaurant, and overnight stays at rustic-chic lodges and B&Bs.
