South Africa Records 17% Jump in Foreign Tourist Arrivals in July
South Africa welcomed more than 1.27 million foreign visitors in July 2026, a 17.3% month-on-month increase and a 6% rise on the same period last year, according to Statistics SA. Holiday travel dominated the figures, with 97.5% of arrivals citing leisure as their purpose of visit. SADC nationals accounted for 79.2% of all tourists, led by visitors from Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Lesotho, while overseas visitors - predominantly from the US, UK and the Netherlands - made up 19.5% of arrivals.
The figures reinforce the sector's growing importance to South Africa's broader economic recovery. Tourism sustained 954,000 direct jobs in 2024 and contributed 4.9% to GDP, outperforming agriculture, utilities and construction. President Cyril Ramaphosa, speaking at the launch of the third phase of a government-business growth partnership last week, identified tourism as one of the fastest routes to job creation, while flagging persistent barriers including air access constraints, visa processing delays and tourist safety concerns as priorities requiring urgent attention.
