South Africa Launches National Astro-Tourism Strategy
South Africa has made history by launching its first National Astro-Tourism Strategy, positioning itself as a leader in Africa’s astro-tourism industry. The strategy was unveiled in Carnarvon, Northern Cape, by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof Blade Nzimande, and the Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille, on World Tourism Day.
The initiative aims to blend science with local culture, offering tourists the opportunity to marvel at the stars while learning indigenous celestial stories from the Khoisan people. Central to the strategy is the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), soon to be the world’s largest radio telescope, and the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) in Sutherland, making the region a hub for stargazing and science tourism.
The strategy focuses on infrastructure development, community partnerships, and the preservation of indigenous knowledge. By promoting rural and agri-tourism in the Karoo, it seeks to stimulate local economies and foster sustainable growth. This initiative highlights South Africa’s commitment to showcasing both its natural beauty and scientific achievements.
