Snowfall Forecast for Drakensberg as Cut-Off Low Brings Disruptive Weather to South Africa

A strong cut-off low (COL) weather system is forecast to bring snowfall, heavy rains, and severe storms to large parts of South Africa this week, particularly affecting tourism regions such as the Drakensberg. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) predicts snow from Wednesday, 23 April, over high-lying areas of Lesotho, the Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal, with cold conditions expected to persist into the weekend.
The COL system is expected to generate widespread showers, with rainfall exceeding 50 mm in some eastern areas by Thursday, and severe thunderstorms likely over the Free State and North West. Travellers and tourism operators in affected regions should prepare for possible disruptions, including road closures, flooding, and unsafe hiking conditions. SAWS will continue to issue updates as conditions evolve.
