Sierra Leone is positioning itself as Africa's next major tourist destination, offering visitors beaches, rich wildlife and authentic cultural experiences. The Ebola-free West African nation, known locally as “Sweet Salone”, is undergoing significant development under a new 10-year tourism strategy.

Tourism Minister Nabeela Tunis is leading the transformation, which includes a new solar-powered international airport in Freetown and a sustainable smart city project on Sherbro Island backed by actor Idris Elba, whose father was born in the country.

The nation boasts 250 miles of largely unexplored coastline, with the Banana Islands offering off-grid experiences including snorkelling, diving and traditional net fishing. Tiwai Island serves as a sanctuary for 11 primate species, while the UNESCO-listed Gola Rainforest National Park protects chimpanzees and forest elephants.

Cultural attractions include the Rogbonko Village Retreat near Makeni, where visitors can experience rural life, and annual events such as the Tangains Festival and Lantern Festival.

While tourism infrastructure remains basic, the country is focusing on sustainable development and community benefits. The tourism ministry emphasises this current period as a unique opportunity to visit before mass tourism develops.
