Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs has launched a crackdown on illegal encroachment within the 6,000-hectare Tourism Development Area surrounding the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary. In collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Protected Area Authority, and local leaders, the ministry conducted an on-site assessment to evaluate the impact of unauthorised land use. This initiative aims to preserve the area’s biodiversity, strengthen conservation enforcement, and support sustainable tourism development.

The government has introduced a zero-tolerance policy on illegal land use, with boundary markers installed to reinforce protection measures. Alongside enforcement, officials are engaging local communities to highlight the economic benefits of ecotourism. With Tacugama playing a key role in conservation and responsible tourism, the initiative aligns with Sierra Leone’s Year of Ecotourism 2025 agenda, positioning the country as a leader in sustainable travel while ensuring long-term benefits for both wildlife and local communities.
