SANParks launches R10.8m marine programme to support small‑scale fishers
South African National Parks has launched a R10.8 million Marine Economy Small‑Scale Fisheries Support Programme in Hondeklip Bay, adjacent to Namaqua National Park, to strengthen livelihoods and safeguard marine ecosystems. Rolled out on 24 February 2026, the three‑year initiative will support communities near seven Marine Protected Areas, expanding a 2018 pilot from the Garden Route, with objectives to promote equitable resource access, responsible and compliant fishing, and conservation alongside socio‑economic development.
At Namaqua National Park, 20 young fishers will benefit from an initial R800,000 investment covering gear, PPE and training in safety at sea, regulatory compliance and sustainable harvesting. SANParks has also produced a practical Small‑Scale Fishers Guide with coastal communities – outlining regulations, responsible practices, the role of MPAs and ocean‑economy opportunities – to be distributed in print and via QR code online. Implemented with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Conservation South Africa and local municipalities, the programme aligns with Operation Phakisa’s Ocean Economy priorities and reinforces stewardship that supports coastal livelihoods and marine tourism.
