SANParks Graduates First Cohort of World-First Park Management Leadership Programme

South African National Parks (SANParks) has celebrated the graduation of 30 staff members from the Certificate in Park Management Leadership, delivered through a partnership with the African Leadership University's (ALU) School of Wildlife Conservation. Described as the first programme of its kind in the world, the Park Management Leadership Development Programme was designed to develop conservation leaders equipped to navigate the complex environmental, social, and economic challenges facing protected areas across Africa. The curriculum combines academic learning with practical application, focusing on strategic leadership, adaptive management, and systems thinking.

Graduates will now progress into a second year structured around mentorship, project implementation, and the testing of innovative conservation solutions within SANParks. The programme aligns with SANParks' Vision 2040, which advances a more inclusive conservation model recognising communities and stakeholders as essential partners in protecting South Africa's natural heritage. The initiative represents a broader shift in African conservation leadership - one that prioritises ecological integrity alongside human well-being and benefit-sharing in the management of the continent's protected areas.
