Akagera National Park in Rwanda is set to welcome 70 southern white rhinos from South Africa later this month, marking the country’s largest-ever rhino translocation. The initiative, involving a 3,400-kilometre journey, forms part of a wider conservation effort to establish a secure breeding population and strengthen Rwanda’s growing reputation as a key safari destination.

The move builds on a similar relocation in 2021, when 30 white rhinos were introduced to Akagera. With around 17,000 southern white rhinos remaining in the wild and poaching on the rise, this translocation is considered a significant step in safeguarding the species. The reintroduction also enhances Rwanda’s biodiversity and adds further appeal to its high-value wildlife tourism offerings.
