Rwanda seeks UNESCO listing for Imigongo and Umuganura
Rwanda is seeking UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage recognition for Imigongo – a traditional geometric art form – and Umuganura, the national harvest festival, according to a report on 2 March 2026. The bid is intended to preserve the practices and raise their international profile.
UNESCO inscription would support safeguarding and skills transmission, while drawing attention to community‑based cultural experiences that complement Rwanda’s established wildlife offer. Increased visibility could also strengthen cultural tourism and dispersal of visitor spend across regions linked to these traditions.
