New Source Market Boosts Zanzibar as August Arrivals Hit 124,481
Russian tourist arrivals to Zanzibar surged 376% in August 2026, reaching 4,298 visitors compared to the same month the previous year, according to data from the Office of the Chief Government Statistician. The increase follows President Samia Suluhu Hassan's official visit to Russia in June 2026, which sought to strengthen bilateral ties in trade, investment and other areas of cooperation. Direct air connectivity between Russia and Tanzania has been cited as a key factor facilitating the growth. Overall, Zanzibar recorded 124,481 visitor arrivals in August 2026 - an 18% increase on the 105,506 recorded in August 2025 - with Europe remaining the leading source region, followed by Africa.
The influx of Russian visitors is generating tangible economic benefits for local communities, with traders, artisans, transport operators and hospitality businesses reporting increased activity in popular destinations such as Nungwi and Kendwa. The trend has also created new employment pathways, with some young Zanzibaris learning Russian to work as translators and bridge communication gaps between visitors and local communities. Zanzibar's Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Minister Rashid Mpishi said the government was working to create an enabling environment for tourism and that rising international arrivals were expanding opportunities for youth across hotels, restaurants, transport, retail and self-employment. Russian visitors cited the island's peace, stability, natural beauty and hospitality as key drawcards.
