Kili Villa  Supports Innovative Human-Elephant Conflict Project in Northern Tanzania

Karatu, Tanzania – Rhotia Valley Tented Lodge , a Kili Villa Subsidiary , is proud to announce its active support for an innovative Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC) mitigation initiative aimed at protecting both local farming communities and wildlife surrounding the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

The project, operating under the name Kazi ya Tembo, combines modern drone technology, daily surveillance, and proactive elephant guidance strategies to safely move elephants away from farmland and back toward protected wildlife corridors. In just three months, the initiative has successfully guided more than 286 elephants away from agricultural areas without harm to animals or people.

Using daily drone surveillance flights, the project focuses on prevention rather than emergency response. By monitoring elephant movement patterns before crop-raiding occurs, local response teams are able to intervene early and reduce conflict between wildlife and surrounding communities.

A key innovation of the project is the use of a pioneering 2-drone relay system, designed to maintain communication and reduce operational risks in difficult valley terrain. The initiative also applies a “zero reward” strategy, discouraging elephants from associating farmland with food sources by consistently guiding them away from cultivated areas.

“At Rhotia Valley, conservation and community are deeply connected,” said Willem Kuipers of Rhotia Valley. “The communities surrounding wildlife areas carry much of the burden of living alongside elephants. Supporting practical and humane solutions that protect both people and wildlife is fully aligned with our vision.”

The initiative contributes to preserving one of Tanzania’s most important wildlife ecosystems while helping farmers protect their livelihoods. By reducing crop damage and improving coexistence, the project aims to create a sustainable long-term model for conservation-based community support.

Rhotia Valley has long been committed to responsible tourism, conservation, and social impact in the Karatu region. The lodge, located near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, is also known for its support of local community projects and educational initiatives.
