Renovated Africa Hall Important Investment for Ethiopia's Greater Tourism Growth: ECA Chief

Africa Hall, a historic emblem of Pan-African unity, has been re-inaugurated following extensive renovations. Originally gifted to the continent in 1961, Africa Hall has long been a significant site for African diplomacy. It was here in 1963 that the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) Charter was signed, marking a pivotal moment in the continent’s history.
Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of UNECA, highlighted the hall's enduring role as a beacon of African unity. He noted that its modernisation not only preserves this legacy but also positions Ethiopia for greater tourism growth, celebrating Africa’s rich history and cultural heritage. The hall now boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including a conference centre, exhibition space, and a visitors’ centre, all while preserving its architectural heritage.
Gatete also emphasised Africa’s vast historical significance, which includes over 130 UNESCO World Heritage sites. He stressed the importance of sharing Africa’s story with the world, noting that the newly modernised Africa Hall is an ideal platform for doing so.
Looking to the future of African unity, Gatete encouraged both Africans and international visitors to explore Africa Hall. He remarked, “Through initiatives like the Africa Continental Free Trade Area and visa relaxation policies, we can honour our founding fathers’ vision of an integrated Africa by enhancing intra-African travel and creating a vibrant tourism market.”
