The KwaXolo Caves Adventures on KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast is undergoing an R8-million expansion to enhance its appeal as a heritage and adventure tourism destination. Located near Margate, Southbroom, and Port Edward, the site is known for its San rock art and dramatic gorge landscapes. The project, led by KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority and Tourism KwaZulu-Natal, aims to boost rural tourism by adding a multipurpose facility, improved infrastructure, and new adventure activities, including a 1.06 km zipline and a high-wire bridge.

Phase 1 of the expansion was completed in January, featuring essential visitor infrastructure such as a reception area, pathways, and a pedestrian bridge over a wetland. Phase 2, currently in progress, will introduce a restaurant, coffee shop, picnic sites, and children’s play areas, alongside expanded adventure offerings. With plans for Phase 3, including luxury chalets and an amphitheatre, the development presents significant investment opportunities while supporting local employment and skills development. The project highlights the region’s potential as a growing tourism hub, demonstrating the economic benefits of sustainable tourism investment.
