Qatar Airways is set to finalise its acquisition of a 49% stake in RwandAir after five years of negotiations. This strategic move will significantly bolster the airline's presence in Central Africa.

RwandAir's CEO, Yvonne Makolo, confirmed that the deal, which has been under discussion since 2019, is expected to be completed by next month. The acquisition faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The stake in RwandAir will enable Qatar Airways to expand its operations in East and Central Africa. RwandAir, with its fleet of 14 aircraft, stands to benefit greatly from the deal, allowing the airline to expand its fleet and routes and enhance staff skills. This partnership will also see the launch of a cargo hub in Kigali, marking Qatar Airways' first such hub outside its home country.

Qatar Airways' investment aligns with its broader strategy, including a 60% stake in the $1.3 billion Bugesera International Airport project in Kigali, expected to be completed by 2028. This new hub will capitalise on Rwanda's strategic location, enhancing connectivity within Africa and beyond.

As part of their growing collaboration, the two airlines have already signed a codeshare agreement and launched direct flights between Kigali and Doha, strengthening ties and expanding their global reach.
