The Eastern Cape Department in South Africa has proposed changing the name of the popular tourist destination Graaff-Reinet to honour anti-apartheid activist Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe. The move is part of a broader effort to transform geographical names reflecting colonial and apartheid legacies.
Supporters believe Sobukwe’s profound history in the area warrants commemorating him in the town’s name. The department conducted public hearings to discuss the changes for Graaff-Reinet and two other towns—part of an emphasis on fostering heritage.
Before finalising decisions, officials say more consultation is needed. Some concerns have emerged around impacts on tourism and unnecessary spending. Civil group AfriForum strongly objects, arguing established names need not change without justification. Despite resistance, authorities maintain transformations can build an inclusive history.
