President Samia leads Zanzibar tree planting on ‘Green Day’
President Samia Suluhu Hassan marked her 66th birthday on 27 January by leading a tree planting exercise at Bungi Kilimo and Kizimkazi in Zanzibar, designated as ‘Green Day’. Environmental stakeholders praised the move as reinforcing Tanzania’s climate action and resilience agenda, with more than 2,000 participants expected under the theme: “Patriotism Means Protecting the Environment – Join Tree Planting”.
The initiative aligns with recent policy measures – including 2025 amendments to the Environmental Management Act mandating environmental units in every ministry, a directive for district councils to plant about 1.5 million trees annually, and broader efforts on clean cooking and electricity access. Stakeholders highlighted potential economic and social benefits – safeguarding water catchments, stabilising crop yields and supporting green jobs, ecotourism and emerging carbon markets – alongside continental advocacy such as the African Women Clean Cooking Support Programme launched at COP28.
