Potential lift of tourism moratorium on La Digue Island, Seychelles

Seychelles' tourism authorities are considering lifting the moratorium on new tourism establishments on La Digue Island, the nation's third most populated island. Sherin Francis, the principal secretary for tourism, revealed this development following a recent meeting with the island's residents.
The moratorium, implemented in August 2021, was extended to December 2023 to assess sustainable development options based on recommendations from a carrying capacity study.
Discussions revolve around the Accommodation Establishment Strategic Development Plan, aiming to enhance tourism infrastructure while preserving La Digue's charm. The proposals, derived from a recent study, emphasise sustainable growth, aligning new room capacities with projected tourism arrivals.
