Pilanesberg Enhances Anti-Poaching Efforts with Smart Radio Network

Pilanesberg Game Reserve in South Africa has significantly upgraded its conservation and anti-poaching capabilities through the installation of a modern digital radio communication system. The new infrastructure, developed by Hytera and implemented by local partner Sentiv, replaces outdated analogue radios and now provides near-complete coverage across the 56,000-hectare reserve, home to the Big Five and critically endangered rhinos.

The system includes GPS-enabled radios, emergency response features, and real-time tracking, improving ranger safety and coordination in remote areas. With tools such as “man down” alerts, emergency buttons, and encrypted communications, rangers can now respond faster and more effectively to incidents. Pilanesberg joins other prominent reserves – including Kruger and Sabi Sabi – in adopting advanced digital solutions as part of broader efforts to protect biodiversity and secure South Africa’s natural heritage.
