Over 200 MTB riders unite for conservation

Over 200 nature lovers and mountain bike riders united to take part in the inaugural Marakele MTB Challenge at Marakele National Park in Limpopo, South Africa on 25 May 2024. The new mountain biking event aims to honour conservation efforts.
Participants, ranging from professional cyclists to newbies, came together to enjoy the unspoilt natural beauty of the Big 5 park while riding routes from 10km to 70km. Those on the longer trails had the once-in-a-lifetime experience of riding through the habitats of lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos and leopards.
The successful debut event hoped to highlight the importance of conservation initiatives and the efforts of groups like SANParks Rangers and Honorary Rangers in protecting South Africa's wildlife and natural areas. By allowing people to experience the park firsthand, organisers aimed to inspire more support for these vital causes.
Entries for the 2025 Marakele MTB Challenge, which helps fund conservation through tourism, will open in September.
