Our Ocean Conference Highlights Marine Flyways to Boost Sustainable Tourism
At the 11th Our Ocean Conference, taking place in Mombasa, Kenya, from 16 to 18 June 2026, marine flyways, the migration routes used by seabirds across the world's oceans, were highlighted as a key to protecting marine ecosystems and supporting sustainable tourism. As the first Our Ocean Conference to be hosted on African soil, the event has placed a global spotlight on the continent's blue economy and coastal conservation. For many African destinations, healthy oceans and thriving birdlife are the foundation of nature-based tourism experiences, from seabird watching and island excursions to coastal wildlife encounters. Protecting these migration corridors helps preserve the natural assets that attract visitors, support local businesses and strengthen the long-term appeal of coastal destinations.
The conference also underscored the importance of cross-border collaboration to conserve marine biodiversity across Africa's coastlines. By safeguarding marine flyways, destinations can enhance their ecotourism offerings, protect fisheries that sustain coastal communities and contribute to global conservation goals. As travellers increasingly seek authentic, nature-based experiences, investing in healthy marine ecosystems will help position Africa as a leader in responsible tourism while ensuring its coastal treasures are protected for future generations.
