New Travel Sector Initiative Aims to Improve Experiences for Neurodivergent Tourists

A collaborative initiative announced at WTM Africa 2025 is set to improve travel support for neurodivergent travellers across Africa. Tourism that Cares and Autism South Africa have partnered to create a standardised set of questionnaires and guidelines for lodges, tour operators, and hospitality providers. The resource, still in development, is focused on gathering key sensory and accessibility information to help operators anticipate and better meet the needs of autistic guests and others with neurological differences such as ADHD.
Practical solutions highlighted include detailed visual guides, fast-tracked airport services, room personalisation, and adapted itineraries that minimise transitions and prioritise calm environments. Industry professionals were urged to consider low- or no-cost adjustments such as dimmable lighting and quieter accommodation placement. A planned resource hub, neurodiversetravellers.com, will offer training and tools for businesses looking to enhance inclusivity. The initiative comes amid growing recognition of neurodiversity in tourism and reinforces the sector’s opportunity to expand access through thoughtful, inclusive service design.
