South Africa's new White Paper on Tourism Development and Promotion has been welcomed by industry experts as a timely and positive step for the country's tourism sector. The North West University's Tourism Research in Economics, Environs and Society (TREES) joins other organisations in endorsing the policy.

Professor Elmarie Slabbert, research director at TREES, emphasised the white paper's relevance in addressing critical industry issues. Key focus areas include knowledge management, research, and safety and security improvements, which are crucial for boosting visitor numbers.

The policy also highlights sustainable travel and the growth of domestic tourism, showing progressive thinking and collaboration between government and the private sector.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille stated that the white paper aims to guide the next phase of tourism development, envisioning a sustainable, competitive, and inclusive sector. It leverages innovation and digital technology to address growth barriers and contribute to the broader economy.

The government plans to work with various departments to improve the visa regime, increase direct flights, and invest in infrastructure showcasing South Africa's diverse culture and heritage. The Department of Tourism is finalising a five-year plan to align with national priorities and strategies.
