New Airstrip Improves Access to Tanzania's Lake Natron
Tanzania's Wildlife Management Authority has completed construction of the Engaresero Airstrip in Ngorongoro District, Arusha Region, designed to improve tourism access to Lake Natron - a key breeding site for lesser flamingos. The airstrip, which features a 1.2km runway with a width of 23 metres, was completed in June 2026 and has since received certification from the Tanzania Airports Authority following confirmation that it meets the required aviation safety standards.
The new facility is expected to enhance connectivity to one of northern Tanzania's more remote natural attractions, making Lake Natron more accessible to visitors travelling through the broader Arusha and Ngorongoro tourism circuit. The development reflects continued investment in aviation infrastructure across Tanzania's northern safari corridor, where improved air access is increasingly seen as a driver of tourism growth and diversification beyond established gateway destinations.
