Mozambique Govt To Buy 4,000 Life Jackets for Maritime Transport Operators

Mozambique’s government will invest approximately $300,000 to purchase and distribute 4,000 life jackets to maritime transport operators across the country by the end of 2025. The initiative, led by the Maritime Transport Institute (Itransmar), aims to bolster safety for passengers and crews amid rising concerns over maritime incidents involving small and artisanal vessels.
The distribution has already begun, with 300 jackets handed over in Angoche, Nampula Province, and 1,600 more set for delivery by the end of April. In total, nearly 150 operators across 34 key crossing points in six provinces will be equipped. The move comes after Itransmar recorded 38 shipwrecks in 2024, resulting in 159 fatalities, the majority linked to inadequate safety equipment on wooden vessels. The initiative highlights a growing governmental focus on safety in Mozambique’s maritime transport sector—critical for both local mobility and coastal tourism operations.
