Morocco to double airport capacity ahead of 2030 World Cup
Morocco has unveiled ambitious plans to more than double its airport capacity from 38 million to 80 million passengers annually by 2030, as announced by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch. The expansion includes significant upgrades to key airports, with Casablanca's Mohammed V International Airport increasing capacity to 23.3 million passengers, whilst Marrakech and Agadir airports will accommodate 14 million and 6.3 million passengers respectively. This development comes as Morocco experiences unprecedented tourism growth, having welcomed 15.9 million visitors in the first 11 months of this year.
The infrastructure initiative extends beyond aviation, encompassing plans to expand the country's high-speed rail network to connect 43 cities by 2040, reaching 87% of Morocco's population. In preparation for co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal, and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco is investing 5 billion dirhams ($500 million) in sporting infrastructure, including the renovation of 45 stadiums and training facilities across six host cities, plus the construction of a new 115,000-seat stadium near Casablanca.
