Morocco secures loan to upgrade airports for 2030 World Cup

The African Development Bank has approved a €270m (US$316m) loan to Morocco to expand and modernise airport infrastructure ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup – co‑hosted with Spain and Portugal – including terminal upgrades and equipment modernisation at Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier and Fez. The investment supports a national plan to lift airport capacity to 80 million passengers by 2030, up from 38 million, as part of a wider AED38bn (US$4bn) programme to accommodate rising arrivals.

Morocco, Africa’s most visited destination in 2024, recorded 18 million tourist arrivals by November 2025, surpassing last year’s 17.4 million. The AfDB facility brings the bank’s commitments to Morocco in 2025 to €1.3bn, while Royal Air Maroc is expanding its fleet to strengthen Casablanca’s role as a hub linking Africa with Europe and the Americas.
