Morocco Launches Africa’s Longest High-Speed Rail Line

King Mohammed VI has officially launched construction of the Kenitra–Marrakech high-speed rail line, poised to become the longest of its kind in Africa. Spanning 430 kilometres, the line will connect key Moroccan cities including Rabat, Casablanca, and Marrakech, significantly reducing travel times and reinforcing the country’s position as a leader in sustainable transport and continental infrastructure development.
Part of a $9.5 billion national railway plan, the new HSR extension aims to support train speeds of up to 350 km/h and will ultimately link Tangier to Marrakech in under three hours. With strong local manufacturing targets and international partnerships—including Alstom, CAF, and Hyundai Rotem—the project is expected to generate thousands of jobs and enhance tourism and economic mobility across Morocco. The development is also aligned with the country’s green infrastructure agenda and could serve as a model for future rail projects elsewhere in Africa.
